Aim: To demonstrate how to heat a liquid inside at test tube
Equipment: Bunsen burner, Heatproof mat, lighter, test tube, test tube tongs, safety glasses
Method:
1. Light the Bunsen burner
2. Fill your test tube to approximately 5 ml water
3. Turn the collar at the Bunsen so it is a blue flame
4. Holding the test tube with test tube tongs, tilt the test tube on a 45 degree angle and place the bottom of the test tube into the flame Ensure the the mouth of the test tube is not pointing towards anyone.
5. Gently wave the test tube in and out of the flame. Remember you are trying to heat the liquid gently
6. Once the water starts to gently bubbly, take it away from the flame. Carefully pour the hot water into the sink.
